Introducing Polly!

Polly is a young GSP mix at about 2.5 years old.  This is what we have put together about Polly’s history.  She was rescued from animal control where she was out of time and death was a short time away.

Polly was found by animal control on the outskirts of town. It was clear that she had been on her own for a while by her physical condition. Her eyes were in serious need of surgery. Polly has had surgery to correct her cherry eyes, been spayed, vaccinated, wormed and checked for heartworm.  Her physical health is 100%.  She weighs about 45 lbs.

Polly has shown behaviors that seem to reflect a really lousy start to life.  Unfortunately,  sometimes people start finding new homes for puppies when they are about four weeks old.  Polly has behaviors that strongly suggest she was one of those puppies.  She lacks some of the ordinary social skills that dogs learn as puppies from their litter mates, their mother, and other dogs that may be in the pack.  Polly is slow to pick on social cues from other dogs about what is okay and what is not, and how to respond to those cues.   On the upside, many of the behaviors have been minimized.  One big help was an amazing puppy that was fostered for a while with Polly.  Harper helped Polly to understand some of the things that she missed when she was a pup.  Polly had to start coming up to get an ear rub, or a treat if Harper was getting one.  Polly did not want to be left out and had to overcome her fear.  This also helped her to get along better with the other dogs in her foster home and to start to understand some of the social cues and rules.  Polly will also come when called, understands go lay down, that’s enough, out, and will sometimes bring a toy back to be tossed again.

Well if you are wondering if you might be the right person and home for Polly……thank you. Some good stuff about Polly.  Polly has a nature, a disposition, a temperament that is sweet and wants to learn despite her start in life.  She has never acted with any aggression towards people even when she was enduring never-ending drops and ointment after her eye surgeries.  On the few occasions I had to quickly grab her collar and stop her from doing something - she never lashed out.  She now gently takes treats.  Polly is not a barker and she has never challenged a barrier. Polly is housetrained and not destructive when left uncrated at home without human supervision.  She sleeps in bed at night and on the couch in the day.  Polly likes blankets on the couch.  She has learned how to live with two 14 year old dogs a Rat Terrier and a Lab mix, two 10 year old terrier mixes, a five year old Chihuahua, along with Harper the pup, and Lilly a foster Chihuahua and her pup.

Polly needs a dog savvy home that can help her continue to become the whole dog that we know she is.  There are many paths that Polly could take to find her way.  She wants things to do.  Polly would probably do well in some activity like flyball, Frisbee, lure coursing, or agility for fun.   She would find great joy in the activity.  After some obedience work in her new home, she would make a great running or hiking companion.  Polly would like to have another dog in the home that enjoys playing, that likes the chase and the tug of war. This is a dog with great potential and has shown she can overcome her past with patience, persistence, and a chance.  If you think you might be the right person and home for Polly please contact GSP Rescue and fill out an application.
